To the bystander Semilong Northampton appears to be a place where nothing happens. But behind the scenes, as we have learnt, there is a small group pecking away. SEMILONG.ORG takes our hats off to them. Attended by our local councillors, Borough Council officials, Safer Community Team officers and residents, SEMILONG.ORG would thoroughly recommend every resident to attend the meetings.
These are held once a month at the B.B.O.B. Rugby Ground building, The entrance is down a drive on the left hand side of the Enterprise Car Rental on St. Andrews Road.
The minutes of the meetings are available on the Semilong Community Forum website (and is well worth a visit), but they are included opposite as well as SEMILONG.ORG believe every resident and business in Semilong Northampton should know what is being done on their behalf.
A member of the Semilong Community Forum requested we remove the minutes of the Forum's meetings from our site. The reason given was "Occasionally I have to reload replacement files following a meeting where corrections need to be made" and also to "save time duplicating what is already done".
This was declined by SEMILONG.ORG. The reasons we gave them (as quoted) are:
They are minutes of a public meeting. That is the main reason.
The minutes being published in a number of different places is perfectly acceptable and ought to be encouraged as it allows for a far wider audience for the work that the forum are doing for the community in Semilong.
The minutes published on SEMILONG.ORG are nothing less than agreed minutes, not draft minutes. We feel sure that on your site, you do not wish to misguide anyone by publishing minutes which are inaccurate and therefore you only publish the agreed 'version'. The same is true for SEMILONG.ORG. Though the internet is filled with reams of reports of the happenings of public meetings with people giving their own perspectives on what was discussed, SEMILONG.ORG do not at this time intend to go down this route. We instead, intend to continue to publish the agreed minutes and where necessary to provide comment. This ensures the work of the forum not to be mis-quoted or altered.
We feel it important we make the documents of local relevance such as your minutes available in the Portable Document Format which cannot be altered. This our IT consultants advise us, maintains information integrity as well as extending readership by being cross platform without the concern of malicious payloads associated with MS Word and other MS Office document formats.
The format also allows for a more compact file size which is easier for people to download especially to portable devices.
Publishing the minutes on SEMILONG.ORG in pdf format allows many people who may not otherwise visit your site or read the minutes, the opportunity to see the breadth of work that the forum does.
The mere putting of a link to the Semilong Community Forum as we are sure you will agree, does not guarantee that people will follow it. Web users increasingly learn not to get side tracked on their internet travels and learn to avoid clicking out of their original web destinations of choice.
Several months ago, a member of the Semilong Community Forum requested that we place a disclaimer on our site with a link to the Forum's site. Though we recognised no-one could confuse the two sites, we consented to their request.
SEMILONG.ORG as the neighbourhood web site, is proud to provide links to local groups such as the Semilong Community Forum. A disclaimer and link were placed on our front page within an hour of that request and was later confirmed by the SEMILONG.ORG group of residents.
In turn SEMILONG.ORG sent this request to the Semilong Community Forum:
"The disclaimer with a link is prominently displayed on the front page of SEMILONG.ORG. We are therefore naturally, inviting the Semilong Community Forum now to return the same courtesy by carrying a similar disclaimer and link to SEMILONG.ORG"
The same courtesy that SEMILONG.ORG gave to the Semilong Community Forum, was unfortunately not returned.
However, SEMILONG.ORG continues to fully support the valuable work that the Semilong Community Forum does and continues to invite them along with all Semilong residents and businesses to submit content to SEMILONG.ORG for inclusion on the neighbourhood web site.
We also recommend every resident and stakeholder in Semilong to attend the Semilong Community Forum meetings.
